INTERVIEW: Singer-songwriter Leah Marie Fuls on her journey to 'Louisiana'

January 11, 2021

Leah Fuls was growing restless.

Nearly a year-and-half had passed since she had been in a Nashville recording studio.

She had new music and a new band she wanted to share with fans.

Then the pandemic happened.

So Fuls waited — and waited — until she decided she couldn’t sit on the fruits of her labor any longer.

She released new single, “Louisiana,” last week.

“I’m super excited because I feel like it’s been really tough with everything going on to release music,” Fuls said during a phone interview. “I just want people to hear it and see what they think about it.”

“Louisiana” is a rustic, slow-burning, pop jam cloaked underneath layers of Americana and a touch of blues; a pleasing mashup of genres that falls somewhere in between mid-‘90s Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan. And it's Fuls’ strongest single to date.

The song tells the story of a young woman’s journey from a small Louisiana town to the top of the charts — a fitting subject for a singer-songwriter looking to leave her own mark on the music world.

Fuls said she initially wrote about the character’s sister following in her sibling’s footsteps but eventually decided to have a more singular lyrical focus.

“I decided I’m just going to give this girl this one story and give her the story she needs,” Fuls said.

Fuls said “Louisiana” is one of a several songs from the Nashville sessions she plans to release soon. She said each of the forthcoming singles sound completely different from the next.

There is also new music in the works.

“I’ve been working on new songs, which I’m excited to eventually record and see how those turn out,” Fuls said. “I just want to keep writing. I want people to see the progress, see the maturity,”

Fuls said, like many other musicians, she’s also looking forward to returning to the stage on a more regular basis.

“I finally found the band that clicked,” she said. “Sometimes you’re looking for that perfect feel with a band and I finally have that. I’m excited for when me and the guys can get back out there again and play music. That would be phenomenal.”

Until then, you can check out “Louisiana” on Amazon, Spotify and iTunes.
