Musikfest 2016: Tributes to Prince, David Bowie replace Aretha Franklin

July 13, 2016

A tribute to late music legends Prince and David Bowie will be held Aug. 8 on the Sands Steel Stage during Musikfest in Bethlehem, officials announced Wednesday in a news release.

The free concert fills in the scheduling hole left that was left following Aretha Franklin's recent cancellation.

Show time is 7 p.m. Gates will open 6 p.m. Admission tickets will not be required to attend.

Lehigh Valley-based Band from Mars will salute the "Thin White Duke" with a retrospective of Bowie's greatest hits, from "Ziggy Stardust" to "Modern Love" and more. The group is made up of members of local bands Start Making Sense, The Insidious Rays and Trouble City All-Stars

Following Band from Mars, Phladelphia's Swift Technique will tackle Prince's catalog, including such iconic cuts as "Purple Rain," "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy."

For this show, tickets to Musikfest's Oasis lounge will cost $10, according to the release. (They are regularly priced at $20 each.)

Bowie succumbed Jan. 10 to a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 69.

Prince died April 21 at age 57.

This is the second time in recent years that Musikfest officials have turned to a local artist to headline its main stage. In 2014, Coopersburg-based guitarist Craig Thatcher and his band were tapped to replace ZZ Top after the latter dropped out due to bassist Dusty Hill undergoing kidney surgery.
