REVIEW: Roi and the Secret People's 'Truck Stop Sushi' will satisfy your musical hunger

May 11, 2017

More of a tasty appetizer than a filling full-course meal, Roi and the Secret People's new EP Truck Stop Sushi is a satisfying, ear-pleasing treat for fans.

Truck Stop Sushi -- the Easton band's follow-up to their 2013 full-length Phoenix -- offers two new tunes: the grungy, slow-burner "Hungry" (originally recorded for the independent horror film Dead and Deadish) and the cosmic romp "Saturn Girl."

Rather than pad their proverbial musical plate with filler, Roi and the Secret People compliment the album with a handful of meaty live tunes. The standouts here are the bluesy, stuck-in-your-head rocker "Arizona" and their de facto show closer "Dog St." Included in the live cuts is a turbo-charged version of their single "Drive."

If you have ever experienced Roi and the Secret People in concert -- which, if you have not, you should, immediately -- then you know that the quintet is at their best when letting loose and going off the cuff. "Dog St." encapsulates that, and then some, as the extended jam lets the five musicians shine as they take turns to show off their impressive chops.

The band -- lead singer Mike Roi, guitarist Ed Golden, bassist Glen Radomski, drummer Craig Martyn and keyboardist Jason Hedrington -- round out the album with a tight cover of Nick Cave's "Ship Song."

Truck Stop Sushi will not only satiate your musical hunger, but will you leave craving more. Just be sure to leave room for future seconds.

Roi and the Secret People's Truck Stop Sushi is available on vinyl and for pre-order on the band's website.
