Influential indie musician Calvin Johnson to rock Bethlehem Area Public Library

September 22, 2017

Former Beat Happening frontman Calvin Johnson will bring his latest music project, Selector Dub Narcotic, to the Bethlehem Area Public Library.

The concert, which is scheduled for Oct. 3, is the latest in the "Tape Swap Radio" concert series "Library After Hours." Show time is 8 p.m.

Johnson formed influential indie pop rock band Beat Happening in 1982 and, later, founded the K Records label. (Beat Happening has been inactive since 1992.) The label's roster of artists has included Modest Mouse, Built to Spill and The Microphones, among others, according to a news release.

Selector Dub Narcotic's debut album, This Party is Just Getting Started, was released in 2016.

Opening the show will be indie rockers VoirVoir, of Bethlehem. It will mark VoirVoir's first full-band performance in more than a year, the release states. VoirVoir's 2014 debut LP, There Are No Good Goodbyes, received a national release in 2015 after being picked up by Fleeting Youth Records.

The inaugural "Library After Hours" concert was held in February and featured singer Mirah. The latter is also signed to Johnson's K Records label.

Tickets for the Johnson-VoirVoir show cost $10, $8 with student ID. Complimentary beer and wine for those ages 21 and older will be available.

"Tape Swap Radio" is an original live music series, which, in addition to hosting its concert series, produces a syndicated radio program that airs on Bethlehem-based National Public Radio affiliate 88.1 WDIY.
