Now in its fifth year, the annual Allentown ArtsFest returns today to the Queen City for three days of live music, fringe art, culture, and more.

In keeping with tradition, this year’s music lineup represents the Lehigh Valley’s diverse and eclectic mix of styles and genres. Scheduled performers include: power pop outfit Summer Scouts, ska-reggae group The Lunch Trucks, hard rock-metal band The Crowning, indie rockers Small Mess, hip-hop artist King Lightning, rocksteady group The Twilights, funk ensemble Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement, and psychedelic pop/experimental rock band Family Animals, and a Killer Tofu Records showcase, among others. Check out the full music schedule.

The free event, hosted by Allentown-based art gallery/performance space Alternative Gallery, will be held through Sunday at Cedar Beach Park.

Allentown ArtsFest will feature more than 100 vendors and more than 300 musicians, comedians, buskers and performers, spread across three stages: Martin Guitar Main Stage, Tape Swap Radio Stage, and the comedy-centric Social Medium Stage.

Additionally, the Voyager Tent will showcase technology and innovative art, including 3-D printing, “indie game developers,” tech projects, and film and animation screenings, according to a news release.

“We want guests at the festival to be not only passive observers, but active participants,” ArtsFest founder and creative director Brandon Wunder says in the release. “The idea behind the Voyager Tent and other aspects of ArtsFest is to make it as interactive as possible. People should experience these technologies firsthand, which will hopefully show them their benefit for the future.”

The festival will also continue its spotlighting of hip-hop culture with its popular “Graffiti Jam” — a mix of breakdancing, turntables, emcee battles, and graffiti artists. As part of the jam, graffiti artists will create graffiti and murals on large panel walls; the panels will then be displayed at the park throughout the week following the festival, according to the release.

Allentown ArtsFest will be the subject of a documentary/concert film, directed by Wunder, and shot over the course of the three-day event, the release states. Screenings of the film will be held at the Alternative Gallery, with dates to be determined.

Festival hours are 4-11 p.m. today, noon-11 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.

Allentown ArtsFest, the flagship project of the Alternative Gallery, was launched in 2014.
