Meet the Band: The Now

November 13, 2015

Residence: Lehigh Valley

Members: Carter Lansing (guitar); Dan DeChellis (keyboard); Shawn Cavanaugh (bass); John Sanfilippo (drums)

The Now recently formed when Lansing -- who fronts folk-country-rock hybrid group Acoustic Kitty Project -- got the itch to form a jam band/side project and reached out to Cavanaugh, Sanfilippo and DeChellis.

DeChellis, a veteran of the local jazz circuit and a fellow member of Acoustic Kitty Project, previously worked with Sanfilippo in a similar type of music project called The Fortunate Fall. In addition to his solo career, Cavanaugh serves as the bassist for Acoustic Bite Trio and is the co-host of the Mic Hop Tours podcast and web series.

Cav explained in a Facebook message that there is no limits or rules in terms of The Now's style and musical direction, describing it as expression through music. He described The Now's sound as a mix of jam band and fusion rock. "It's like, if you asked me how I'm doing today, my response would be different than it was yesterday, because I may be feeling completely different, so it's constantly progressing."

Though there are no immediate plans of recording or releasing a studio album, Cav said there is a possibility that the band may release only live recordings to stay true to their moniker and the spirit of capturing music in the moment. "What we create stays in that moment. We are creating a unique experience for everyone in the room that won't, and can't, be completely recreated again," he said.

Lansing added, "The Now is what it was. It is the is. It won't be the should but it will always be the could. It is the here. Here is The Now."

Catch them if you can: The Now will make their live debut 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Two Rivers Brewing Company in Easton.
