INTERVIEW: 'I love Bethlehem,' says Better Than Ezra singer Kevin Griffin

October 29, 2016

Better Than Ezra front-man Kevin Griffin tonight will make his third solo visit to the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem.

Luckily for fans, Griffin plans on utilizing the same spontaneous, in-the-moment charm for which he has become known. During a brief Oct. 13 phone interview, Griffin teased busting out an on-the-spot ditty about the Christmas City and maybe even some sweet new dance moves. (Griffin called while on a family excursion to Dollywood in Tennessee.)

"There's always something on the news at the venue where I'm at and I go off on a tangent (about it) and it becomes the theme of the night," Griffin joked. "I love Bethlehem. I love that whole performing arts center. I love what they've done there."

Griffin will again be joined by percussionist Jen Lowe. In addition to performing Better Than Ezra cuts, Griffin said those in attendance can expect to hear a rendition or two of other artists' songs that bear his signature. Griffin, an accomplished songwriter outside of Better Than Ezra, has also penned tunes for Howie Day, Sugarland, Barenaked Ladies and James Blunt, among others.

He previously headlined SteelStacks' Musikfest Cafe stage in 2015 and 2011. The latter performance was split with co-headliner Ed Roland, of Collective Soul. In August 2015, Better Than Ezra stopped at neighboring Sands Bethlehem Event Center as part of the 1990s-themed Under the Sun Tour.

"I like cities that have a sense of history. This is what (Bethlehem) is all about... I just dig it," Griffin said. "Maybe I'll, just thinking off the top of my head, maybe I'll do a (Bruce) Springsteen song about Bethlehem."

Griffin said he feels at home at Musikfest Cafe and thrives on the intimacy of the room. "I like a stage where I can get some energy back and forth."

Better Than Ezra's hits include "Desperately Wanting," "Juicy," "Good," "Extra Ordinary," "King of New Orleans" and "In the Blood." The band released their eighth studio album, All Together Now, in 2014.
